Donald A. B. Lindberg, M.D., is a scientist who has pioneered in applying computer technology to health care beginning in 1960 at the University of Missouri. In 1984, Dr. Lindberg was appointed Director of the National Library of Medicine, the world's largest biomedical library. From 1992-1995 he served in a concurrent position as founding Director of the National Coordination Office for High Performance Computing and Communications (HPCC) in the Office of Science and Technology Policy, Executive Office of the President. In 1996 he was named by the HHS Secretary to be the U.S. Coordinator for the G-7 Global Health Applications Project.
In addition to an eminent career in pathology, Dr. Lindberg has made notable contributions to information and computer activities in medical diagnosis, artificial intelligence, and educational programs. Before his appointment as NLM Director, he was Professor of Information Science and Professor of Pathology at the University of Missouri-Columbia. He has current academic appointments as Clinical Professor of Pathology at the University of Virginia and Adjunct Professor of Pathology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.
Dr. Lindberg was elected the first President of the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA). As the country's senior statesman for medicine and computers, he has been called upon to serve on many boards including the Computer Science and Engineering Board of the National Academy of Sciences, the National Board of Medical Examiners, and the Council of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences. Dr. Lindberg is the author of three books: The Computer and Medical Care; Computers in Life Science Research; and The Growth of Medical Information Systems in the United States, several book chapters, and more than 200 articles and reports. He has served as editor and editorial board member of nine publications including the Journal of the American Medical Association.
Dr. Lindberg graduated Magna cum Laude from Amherst College and received his M.D. degree from the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University. Among the honors he has received are Phi Beta Kappa, Surgeon General's Medallion, Presidential Senior Executive Rank Award, and honorary doctorates from Amherst College, the State University of New York at Syracuse, and the University of Missouri-Columbia. Fred B. Wood has 30+ years experience in information technology, applications, assessment, and policy--including 5 years at the National Library of Medicine (NLM)/National Institutes of Health (NIH) as a Special Expert; 17 years at the Office of Technology Assessment (OTA), United States Congress, as a Project Director and Senior Associate; and 9 years at The George Washington University Program of Policy Studies in Science and Technology (GWU/PPSST) as a Project Manager and Research Scientist. He has also served as Managing Editor of the Harvard Business School newspaper (The HarBus News), and Public Affairs Researcher at IBM Corporate Headquarters. Dr. Wood currently is assigned to the Office of Health Information Programs Development at NLM, where his responsibilities include domestic and international Internet connectivity assessment, technology transfer, web evaluation, Tribal connections, and outreach planning and evaluation. He also holds an Adjunct Professor appointment in the Communications, Culture, and Technology Program at Georgetown University, where he teaches a graduate course on "Internet Technology Assessment." In addition, he serves as a Member of the Federal Depository Library Council, a statutory advisory group to the Public Printer of the United States. Dr. Wood has managed over two dozen assessments of information technology applications and issues; he has a bachelors degree in electrical engineering from Oregon State University and masters and doctoral degrees in business administration from Harvard Business School and The George Washington University. Kevin Mabley is Vice President--Strategic & Analytical Services, Cyber Dialogue Inc. Mr. Mabley is responsible for managing custom research projects and developing new methodologies for interactive research and data mining at Cyber Dialogue. Cyber Dialogue conducts custom and syndicated database marketing research, devoted to helping leading Fortune 500 companies and interactive agencies build customer relationships through digital media. Mr. Mabley has been actively researching online consumers for the past 7 years. Since joining Cyber Dialogue Inc., Kevin has been devoted to developing online database marketing tools for Web site development, online brand positioning, market segmentation, and product/concept development. Prior to joining Cyber Dialogue in 1995, Mr. Mabley was project director at Cyber Dialogue's sister company, Yankelovich Partners Inc., where he managed custom modeling and segmentation projects in the areas of New Media, consumer product forecasting, and Financial Services. Kevin Garton is Vice President--Marketing, comScore Networks, Inc. Mr. Garton has extensive experience in marketing, brand management and e-business, and is a recognized leader in improving e-business operations through enhanced customer relationship marketing. Most recently, Mr. Garton was senior director of marketing and brand development at Strategy.com, a wireless applications service provider, where he was responsible for brand strategy, marketing communications, market research, customer acquisition, and affiliate marketing. Prior to Strategy.com, Mr. Garton was Director of Industry Solutions Marketing at MicroStrategy, a provider of e-business software, where he created a methodology for ensuring that its technology was applied in key vertical markets, including retail, consumer products, financial services, and telecommunications. Before joining MicroStrategy, Mr. Garton held a variety of sales and marketing positions at Levi Strauss, Corning, and Procter & Gamble. He received an MBA degree from the J.L. Bill Silberg is Vice President and Executive Editor for Medscape, Inc., a leading Web provider of clinical content and information services. Medscape, a long-standing Web portal for health and medical professionals, merged in mid-2000 with MedicaLogic, the leading maker of electronic medical records. Mr. Silberg is responsible for all Medscape content developed for physicians and other health care professionals, including continuing medical education programs. He joined Medscape in 1999 after spending 13 years at the American Medical Association, the last four as Editorial Director for Medical News and New Media at JAMA , the Journal of the American Medical Association. Before that, he served as Deputy Editor of American Medical News, the AMAs weekly socioeconomic newspaper for physicians, and as the AMAs Science News Editor. Prior to joining the AMA, Bill spent three years as Associate Director of Public Affairs for the University of Chicago Medical Center. He began his career with UPI, spending seven years with the wire service as a reporter, editor, and bureau chief in the United States. Previous Page
Carlynn J. Thompson is Director, R&D and Acquisition Information Support, Defense Technical Information Center, Defense Information Systems Agency, Office of the Secretary of Defense. Ms. Thompson graduated from the University of Maryland in 1976 with a Master's Degree in Library and Information Science. She became Director of the Research Development and Acquisition Information Support Directorate within the Defense Technical Information Center in 1991. Her Directorate provides information technology support to senior level managers in the Pentagon. Ms. Thompson served as chair of the World Wide Web Federal Consortium from September 1996 to January 1998. She frequently addresses groups concerning emerging policy issues and new directions in information technology. Ms. Thompson has received numerous awards during her career, including the Defense Logistics Agency Meritorious Civilian Service Award in 1988. In February 1998, the Association of Federal Information Resources Management presented her with an AFFIRM Leadership Award for FedWeb'97. In 1999, she was recognized by Federal Computer Week as a "Federal 100" and she has also been selected by the Federal Library and Information Center Committee (FLICC) as the 2000 Federal Librarian of the Year. Lisa Zolly is Knowledge Manager for the National Biological Information Infrastructure (NBII) Program, based in the US Geological Surveys Biological Informatics Office in Reston, Va. Her primary responsibilities include thematic content development; site architecture and usability; and development and integration of tools and technologies to facilitate information retrieval and dissemination. She received an M.S. in Information Science from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, and holds a B.A. and an M.A. in English from Virginia Tech. Previous Page
Susan Elster is a graduate of Carnegie Mellon Universitys Heinz School and holds a doctorate in Public Policy Analysis. She is a consultant to the Jewish Healthcare Foundation, focusing on applied research design and project management. She has structured research and managed projects in a variety of areas, including: an assessment of the health needs of Pittsburghs Jewish community (to guide Foundation funding); a study of employment in Southwestern Pennsylvanias health sector (to provide background for a regional health workforce conference); a study of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder in children (leading to a regional conference exploring best practices in diagnosis and treatment); and a community development approach to volunteerism (leading to the creation of an volunteer center whose mission is to match volunteers to opportunities in a variety of member organizations).
