Message from CENDI Chairman R. Paul Ryan

As CENDI’s 2007-2008 Chairman, I look forward to continuing to work with my colleagues from federal agencies who are engaged in scientific and technical research and development. CENDI’s mission is to help improve the productivity of federal science- and technology-based programs. To that end, CENDI’s member agencies play an important role in addressing national science and technology priorities that, in turn, can strengthen U.S. competitiveness.

CENDI’s annual planning conference (September 2007) provided an opportunity for us to respond to changing requirements. Now 13 members strong, CENDI’s goal is, more than ever, to ensure that government information is more accessible.

What are some issues we will examine in the year ahead?

Encouraging additional partnerships with non-CENDI agencies and organizations.
Leveraging resources in digitizing legacy collections
Supporting federal direction in open public access policies
Opening our content to search engines
Continuing to foment ideas through workshops (both for the public and CENDI-only) and other collaborations.

Science.gov (http://science.gov) continues to be a flagship project of CENDI. As it celebrates its fifth anniversary in 2007, we continue developing Science.gov by monitoring and adding to its content, technology and customer development and relations. In fact, this Web site is the model for the launch of worldwidescience.org (http://worldwidescience.org), a global science gateway. I am proud that Science.gov remains such an excellent investment for CENDI, our parent organizations and the American public.

As Administrator of the Defense Technical Information Center (DTIC), I remain very proud of the long-standing relationship we have with CENDI.

I appreciate the opportunity to serve as CENDI’s chairman for the coming year and am pleased to be part of this interagency organization.
