CENDI Project — Metrics and Evaluation

In April 2001, CENDI's Metrics and Evaluation Task Group conducted a CENDI Sponsored Symposium, Evaluating our Web Presence—Challenges, Metrics, Results. Co-sponsored by the National Library of Medicine, the symposium featured presentations and a discussion panel addressing the considerations and methods in use by various CENDI agencies to evaluate the effectiveness of their Web presence. The summary paper from that symposium is now available online.

The Task Group evolved from the Web-Metrics Task Group formed in 1998. It operated under the User Education Working Group, which has now become the Education and Training Working Group.

In 1999, the Metrics and Evaluation Task Group looked more closely at research initiatives that might be needed to advance the consistency and effectiveness of evaluation techniques. The group found that although software used by the agencies continued to be diverse, common definitions for metrics would be helpful. Also, newer aspects of metrics and evaluation such as Web-based customer satisfaction surveys and end-to-end Internet performance were not well advanced among the agencies. The results are documented in the publication Web Metrics and Evaluation: Current State of Implementation Among the CENDI Agencies PHASE 1 (CENDI/00-2).

In 1998, CENDI's original Web-Metrics Task Group reviewed the practices, software, and statistics being collected and reported for usage of Web products and services. The group's report found a variety of commercial and agency-developed utility programs to log and analyze Web usage. The results are documented in the publication Web Metrics Among the CENDI Agencies: Collection and Analysis (CENDI/98-1).
